A crowd estimated at about 200 people gathered at the Renton Civic Theatre – and checked out the concessions – for the screening of 17 films entered in Renton FilmFrenzy V.

A big loud appreciative crowd gathered Monday to watch all the films entered in Renton FilmFrenzy V, in advance of the Curvee Awards Gala tonight (Tuesday) at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center.

About 200 people, including many of the filmmakers and their friends and families, watched the films, about double the number who attended the first-ever screening of all films last year.

In the past only winning films were shown at the Curvee gala, so the public didn’t see some of the films.

“The energy was positive, the films were diverse, and it was all-in-all a fabulous prelude to tonight’s Curvee Awards Gala,” said Suzanne Dale Estey, the City of Renton’s economic development director.

Master of ceremonies Kelley Balcomb-Bartok kept the pace going for the 17 four-minutes films that were shown. Sixteen of those films are competing for a Curvee, including a special Curvee voted by the screening crowd for its favorite.

He also noted that in the future, producers should let FilmFrenzy organizers know in advance when they plan to have fake guns drawn and fights as part of the storyline.

Renton Police responded to just such a call during the filming in early October of the student film, “The Drive,” on Logan Avenue. Balcomb-Bartok arrived just moments later to explain the situation to officers.

Voting for the Renton Reporter People’s Choice Award begins Wednesday online at rentonreporter.com. Voting ends on Nov. 6; the winner will be announced in the Renton Reporter on Nov. 9.

The main event is tonight starting at 7 p.m. when the Curvee awards and cash prizes will be handed out at the free Curvee Awards Gala at IPAC at Renton High School, 400 S. Second St.

Mayor Denis Law will welcome those attending the gala.

Then the “And the Curvee goes to …” begins. Awards are presented in the two divisions, student and open, and there is one Best Picture award.

Also presented are Curvees for the Special Judges’ Award, Best Use of Renton, Outstanding Woman in Film, TheFilmSchool Outstanding Screenwriter and Best Actor.

Before the gala Taco Time will hand out free food to the first 250 people in attendance from its food truck, “Traveler.”

This is the fifth year for Renton FilmFrenzy, a project of the Renton Community Marketing Campaign.
