The following information was compiled from City of Renton police reports.

Police are dubious of man’s carjacking story at knifepoint on Jan. 1.

A Kent man claims he was robbed of his car at knifepoint while waiting for a friend at the McDonald’s, 77 Rainier Ave. S., between midnight and 1 a.m.

The 35-year-old male told police he was waiting in his 1994 Chevy Suburban, when two males approached him asking for the time and some change. Then one of them pulled out a box cutter-like knife and told the man to get out of the truck. The man tried to fight off the attacker with the knife, but heard a clicking sound he believed to be a gun and decided to run off. He then walked to his home in Kent and talked with his wife about reporting the incident in the morning, as he didn’t have a home phone and left his cell phone in the vehicle.

Police were doubtful the man was telling the truth because he would have had to walk 8 1/2 miles to get home in 20-degree temperatures, passing multiple pedestrians and pay phones with which to call 911.

A check of the vehicle revealed it was involved in a one-car rollover accident at South 63rd Street and Renton Avenue South and was impounded.

Police were unclear if the incident actually occurred as the victim described it.
