Kentwood edges Hazen by one point at Les Schwab Tip Off Classic | Boys basketball

The Hazen boys basketball team opened the season with a 55-54 non-league loss to Kentwood Dec. 2 at the Les Scwab Tip Off Classic.

The Highlanders (0-1) built a three-point lead at the half, but Kentwood took the lead back in the third quarter with a 10-0 run.

The Conquerors, the defending 4A state champions, outscored the Highlanders 21-8 in the third quarter.

Hazen crawled back into the game and finally brought it to a tie at 48-48 after five straight points by Frankie Johnson. Johnson fnished the game with 11 points.

Hazen led 52-50 with less than two minutes left, but Kentwood took the lead with 24 seconds left in the game when Taylor Jones made a layup.

Brandt Graybeal led Hazen with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Michael Dampier scored 11 points.
