Hazen opened league play with a 4-2 win against Highline Thursday.

Highline’s Kaitlyn Mendoza (assist by Tonesha Kleiner) scored early when a Hazen (1-1 overall, 1-0 Seamount) player lost her footing trying to channel the ball away from the goal.

“It’s something that just happens from time to time – a player working hard to stop an attack and doing everything right ends up on the turf,” said Hazen coach Ken Matthews. “I think we all froze for a second.”

Junior Lexi Garvin (Marina Vaughn) scored to tie the game before the half.

“I have a phrase I like to throw out – Highlander Soccer. The definition is pretty broad and can change from time to time. Mainly it’s our style, confidence and the mental way we approach and play the game. We always want to play our game so I asked the girls to go out and play our game, not their game, in the second half. Now and in the future, that’s Highlander Soccer,” Matthews said.

Three minutes into the second half senior Taylor Hoover found striker Kayla Hackman for a goal to give the Highlanders a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes later Garvin scored another goal from Hoover.

Highline’s Mendoza (Kleiner) added another goal to pull within 3-2. Hackman scored on an assist by Sarah Schoville to give Hazen the final 4-2 lead.

“When we gave up that fluke goal early they could have easily folded,” Matthews said.”But to their credit they rallied, encouraged each other, and put on a very solid display of good soccer. This win is totally on the players.”

Lindbergh 9, Foster 0

Lindbergh beat up on Foster and won 9-0 Thursday.

The Eagles (1-0-1) go a hat trick from Nicole Brunette. Kayse Angel, Elise Aylward (2), Selena Mullins, Lauren Hunter and Jordyn McLuen also score goals in the blowout.

Audrey Cunningham recorded the shutout for Lindbergh in goal.

Eastlake 4, Liberty 1

Liberty finished a tough opening week with a 4-1 loss to Eastlake Saturday.

The Patriots (0-3 overall, 0-0 KingCo) played three good non-league opponents in Issaquah, Newport and Eastlake. They open league play against Mount Si Tuesday.

Kailiana Johnson (assist by Cassidy Nangle) scored Liberty’s only goal at 76 minutes.
