A fatter international book section with books in a variety of languages.

That is the primary goal of the second annual walk-a-thon that Liberty High School’s Honors Society is hosting at Liberty on May 22.

But Liberty’s Honors Society needs the community’s help to make its walk-a-thon a success.

Local business sponsors are needed. Sponsors are asked to donate food and drinks, prizes and money.

Adding to Liberty’s international book section is the Honors Society’s way of unifying the school, says Ashley Turnidge, president of Liberty’s Honors Society.

“In light of recent economic hardship, it’s also our means of combating dramatic reductions in school funding,” Turnidge said.

Turnidge and her fellow Honors Society members established Liberty’s international book section with the $3,500 they raised during last year’s walk-a-thon.

This year the group is aiming to raise at least $5,000.

The theme of this year’s walk-a-thon is “Steps Towards Globalization.” That means the fundraising crew will donate event proceeds not only to Liberty, but toward another school as well.

That school is the Father Agnel Multipurpose School & Jr. College in Navi Mumbai, India.

Father Agnel was chosen as a beneficiary because it was attended by a member of Liberty’s Honors Society.

“We figured improving the academic experience for students both at home and abroad would be fitting,” Turnidge said.
