Track and field: Liberty team picks up district titles, state berths and school records at district meet

Liberty’s Eric Bice and Chandler Jenkins each won district titles for the Patriots at the SeaKing 3A District Championships May 22.

Bice won the 1600, with a time of 4 minutes, 17.18 seconds. The time broke a Liberty record that he set the previous week.

Jenkins won the triple jump, with a distance of 43 feet, seven inches. Jenkins also placed second in the long jump and fifth in the high jump.

There were a number of other notable performances for Patriot athletes. Mitchell Byron placed third in the 400, Liberty’s team of Bice, Devin Bennett, Troy Solly and Byron won the 4X400 relay, Peter Stacy placed fourth in the discus and second in the javelin, Joshua Gordon placed third in the high jump and Bennett placed sixth in long jump.

Notable performances on the girls side: Kelsey Werre placed third in the 100 and second in the 200, Madison Birdsall placed fifth in the 400, Hannah Robins placed second in pole vault and Krista Lockhart tied for third in pole vault.

Werre qualified for four events at state (100, 200, 800 relay and 1600 relay) while breaking school records in the 100 and 200 at the district meet.

In total, Liberty had 13 athletes qualify for the state tournament.
