Lindbergh baseball falls to Hale in district tournament

Eagles snap 17 inning scoreless streak in the loss.

A roster full of underclassmen gained valuable experience on the diamond on May 8 as the Lindbergh Eagles fell in the first round of the District 2 Tournament 12-2 to Nathan Hale High School.

“Nobody expected us to be here, even us,” said Lindbergh Skipper Benny Benavides.

The Eagles finished over .500 this season, and with just two juniors in the starting nine, and the rest freshmen and sophomores, having the chance to compete has been special for Benavides.

Lindbergh was entering on a bit of a cold streak as they were held scoreless in their last 14 innings of play entering the district tournament. But the Eagles snapped that streak in the fourth inning against Hale.

The two runs that came across reached via double. Junior centerfielder Tyson Glenn-Thomas hit his double to left field and scored on Isaiah Soto-Hernandez’s double immediately following. Soto-Hernandez came around to score on an error to cut the 8-1 lead to 8-2.

Lindbergh’s top three hitters in the order — Aaron Melendres-Rodriguez, Glenn-Thomas and Soto-Hernandez — will be the marker for success for the Eagles in the future. All three play up the middle: Melendres-Rodriguez (SS), Glenn-Thomas (CF) and Soto-Hernandez does the catching.

Vincent Campos tossed 4.2 innings for the Eagles in the loss, but he does have a no-hitter on his record this season. Campos went 7 innings allowed no hits and one earned run in a 2-1 win over Cedarcrest back on April 23. The sophomore righty struck out five and walked two and recorded a no-hitter against the would-be number one seed in the 2A District 2 Tournament.

Hale put up three in the first, two in the second, three runs in the third and fourth before capping off the mercy rule with a run in the fifth inning.

Lindbergh now plays Renton on May 10 in the consolation bracket of the District 2 Tournament.
