The Hazen boys soccer team won its third straight game, beating Highline 6-1 Tuesday night.

The Highlanders (6-4-4 overall, 6-1-2 Seamount) now have 8.5 playoff points for the 3A Seamount/Bremerton playoff standings. Kennedy Catholic is in second with 5.5 points. Bremerton and Highline each have five points.

Hazen avenged an early season, 3-0 loss to the Pirates.

“I don’t know why Highline is such a tough game for us, both with the girls and boys,” said Hazen coach Ken Matthews. “They seem to play their best games against us.”

The teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first half, then Highline scored on a counter attack four minutes into the second half. After that, Hazen controlled the game.

Three minutes later, Jalen Conway scored off of a Conner Hall assist to bring the score to 1-1. Javier Zuniga (assist Ryan Wong) scored to put Hazen ahead. Later Zuniga crossed a ball that a Highline defender knocked into his own net.

Ten minutes later, Sam Bunnell gave the Highlanders plenty of breathing room by scoring a hat trick, within three minutes. Zuniga, Hall and Frankie Johnson had assists.

“The team has been doing well these last few games. I don’t want to ever jinx anything, but the boys are finding that elusive ‘team’ thing. They play very well off each other,” said Matthews.

Hazen has regular-season games left against Kennedy Catholic (home, April 27, 6 p.m.) and Highline (away, May 3, 7:30 p.m). The team is also within striking distance for the Seamount title. Tyee currently leads the way at 7-0-1 in league play.
