The Hazen girls soccer team traveled to Bonney lake and Sumner this past weekend for a season-opening jamboree, where they played Bonney Lake to a draw and beat White River in shortened games.

Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association rules set the girls season at 16 games, but allow for jamborees where teams play limited-game formats for a total of 40 minutes of soccer.

Hazen played two 20-minute games as a way to get ready for the season and get a look at some of their future opponents.

“The players and I agree jamborees just make you want to play longer,” Coach Ken Matthews said in a press release. “But in reality they are a great way for players and coaches to get a look playing against other teams.”

Hazen’s varsity team began against Bonney Lake with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Nia Johnson had the goal for Hazen off an assist from Nicole Lenton.

In the second game, the Lady Highlanders topped White River 1-0 on a Madison Taylor goal off an assist from Allison Sergeant. Keepers Kaitlyn Kitely and Alyssa Gummere shared the shutout.

Hazen opens the regular season at 7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, with a match-up against Lindbergh at Renton Memorial Stadium.
