After a tough start to the season, the Hazen Highlanders boys soccer team on Tuesday defeated Kenendy Catholic 3-0 for their fifth straight win.
Captain Reyes Garcia led the way with two goals and keeper Louis Rodriguez kept the Lancers out of the net to notch the Highlanders’ fourth shutout in five games.
The loss is just the second by Kennedy in Seamount play in the past two years. The first loss came last week to Lindbergh.
“As I told the guys tonight – those of you who have been here know what this means,” Coach Ken Matthews said in an email. “
Garcia’s first goal came about halfway through the first half off an assist from Ethan Kem and the score stood at 1-0 through the break.
At about 7 minutes into the second half, Kem was fouled int he box for a penalty kick, which Garcia roofed in off the top of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Then, as the kennedy Keeper came out of the net, junior Leon Bamba launched a shot from 30 feet out that soared over the retreating goalie’s head and into the net for an insurance goal.
Hazen moves to 5-2-1 overall and 5-1 in the Seamount League with the win. They play at Tyee on Wednesday.
