Hazen soccer beats Highline 6-1

Senior midfielder Emma Lorrigan and senior forward Brook Swensen each had two goals and an assist for the Highlanders.

The Hazen girls soccer team picked up a much-needed 6-1 win Thursday in a non-counting game against league rivals Highline.

Coach Ken Matthews said Senior Night came about a month early for the Highlanders as senior midfielder Emma Lorrigan and senior forward Brook Swensen each had two goals and an assist.

Junior mid Erin Zetterberg opened the scoring in the 12th minute off Swensen’s assist. Swensen’s first goal came two minutes later as Zetterberg returned the favor.

Highline scored their lone goal eight minutes later.

But the Highlanders answered back when sophomore mid Amy Warmenhoven scored at the 22-minute mark, assisted by sophomore Allison Sargent to give Hazen a 3-1 lead at the half.

The second half started a little slow, but in an eight-minute span, Lorrigan and Swensen got three goals. The assists came from junior defender Madeline Kaiser, Swensen and Sargent’s second of the night.

“Before the game Jeb (Highline Coach Jeb Binns) asked how we were doing. I told him we’re better than our record, but we haven’t clicked yet,” Hazen Coach Ken Matthews said in a press release. “His hope was we wouldn’t do it tonight.”

But unfortunately for the Pirates, “click” they did.

“We showed good improvement in many areas tonight. We won more 50/50 balls, our passing was crisp, and the team played more like, well, a team,” Matthews ended.

The Highlanders are now 1-3-2 and will take on Seattle Academy Saturday at Hazen.
