Hazen girls win district track meet

Two wins by Michelle Lilly help Highlanders take top spot for first time since 1994.

The Hazen girls track team won the west central district (WCD) championships this past weekend for the first time since 1994.

The Hazen girls ended at 145 points with Enumclaw coming in second with 133.5 points.

The Highlanders got standout performances from several athletes, including Kate Lilly who won both the the 800- and 1600-meter races. Michelle Lilly won the high jump and placed third in triple jump. Alicia Nguyen won the Long Jump. Alexis Rogers was a placer in every sprint event as well, taking second in the 100, second in the 200, fifth in the 400 and on the third-place 4×400 relay team.

The team was able to win with a scattering of points coming from all event areas. Hurdlers, sprinters, distance runners, jumpers and throwers all contributed.

Hazen will be sending 21 kids to state in Tacoma this week.

“Our goal was 20 kids to state so we are very excited about what’s about to happen in Tacoma this weekend!” Coach Micheal Maloney said in an email.

On the boys side Dario Cirlincione made it in the 800 and the boys 4×400 of Jakob Smith, Alex Fortescue, Saivon Johnson and Dario qualified.
