RTC pool important to health

Renton Technical College plans to close its swimming pool on Jan. 1, ending the water aerobics fitness program. I am one of more than 80 individuals who use the pool at least twice weekly and rely on this activity as an important tool for my health and wellness. It has specifically lowered by cholesterol levels, aided in weight loss, reduced work-related stress, provided muscle toning and is a social activity as well.

I urge you to encourage the college to consider other options. This could lead to more efficient and cost-effective pool operation. As government and public institutions invest resources to increase community health and wellness through a variety of initiatives, it is counterproductive to see an excellent resource sit idle or be demolished. The pool appears to be well maintained and has no visible maintenance issues. There are no public high school pools in Renton that can accommodate classes since their pools are fully utilized.

Our ideas:

1. Expand class offerings to include current aerobics classes, fitness training, public swimming, senior fitness training, toddler lessons, lifeguard training, kayak safety classes, scuba classes and outgrow “fear of water” classes.

2. Evaluate if Renton Parks and Recreation could offer pool classes during early morning, daytime and weekend hours. If marketed successfully, these offerings may lead to additional revenue to offset pool operating costs.

3. In addition to the above, explore ways to use this community asset since it appears that currently it is not being used to its full potential.

Renton citizens spent tax dollars to fund the Henry Moses Aquatic Center, which serves mainly young people and operates only three months of the year. Please lend your support to help find ways to keep Renton Technical College’s pool in operation. It provides an excellent opportunity for Renton citizens to maintain their health and fitness.
