Work to shut HOV lanes on 405 three weekends

For three weekends in October, the Washington state Department of Transportation will close the HOV lanes on I-405 in both directions between State Route 167 and the Sunset Boulevard exit for electrical work.

The state is expecting some traffic back-ups in the area during these HOV lane closures, especially during daylight hours. The state suggests planning ahead by allowing extra travel time or using alternative routes such as I-5, SR 520 and I-90.

Weekend lane closure schedule:

  • Saturday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. to Sunday at 11 a.m.
  • Saturday, Oct, 23, at 9 p.m. to Sunday at 11 a.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. to Sunday at 1 p.m.

Crews are pulling long continuous electrical lines underground from SR 167 up to Sunset Boulevard. On the first two weekends, they’re pulling fiber optic IT lines and on the third weekend they’re pulling a braided copper line.

The work is in the middle of the freeway, so the HOV lanes need to be closed to give workers the room they need to work safely.
