The City of Renton is hopeful after Waste Management and Teamsters Local 117 reached a tentative agreement Wednesday.

This comes on the heels of the city issuing a letter of concerns about the disruption of garbage and recycling collection services to Renton residents earlier in the day.

“Once the union ratifies the agreement we hope to have more details from WM in terms of their collection schedules, etc.,” said Preeti Shridhar, deputy public affairs administrator for Renton. “But this is good news and we expect the situation to be taken care of.”

WM and Local 117 reached the tentative agreement on a new 6-year contract yesterday, with a vote by Teamsters members scheduled for 9 a.m., Thursday at Union Hall in Tukwila. Garbage drivers were supposed to return to work Thursday morning and begin servicing their regular collection routes, according to the WM web site.

Recycling and yard waste collection is still supposed to be limited due to the timing of the vote. The Teamsters have been on strike since July 25.

In the letter issued by the City of Renton, Mayor Denis Law expressed his concerns about the disruption of services to area residents.In it he explained how,

“Each additional day of service interruption erodes that relationship and the trust built” between WM and the City of Renton.Law also complained that recyclables and organics had not been collected and many businesses had gone without regular garbage and recyclables collection. “It is our expectation that regularly scheduled service to all of Renton’s customers will be fully restored beginning August 2, 2012,” Law wrote. “Should the service interruption continue we will take the necessary action to protect our ratepayers including the assessment of Performance Fees under section 4.1 of our contract with your company.”
