Trash collection has resumed for Republic Services’ customers after a strike stopped collection for more than a week.
Republic Services will collect garbage and compostables for all single-family residential customers this week.
Customers should place carts out for collection by 6 a.m. and can add twice the amount of bagged garbage to make up for the missed collection dates. Republic Services will not collect recycling from single-family residential customers this week, but recycling will be collected on the next regular collection date. Customers can take extra recyclables to any King County transfer station any day of the week at no charge.
The city of Renton is cancelling the two garbage collection events, previously scheduled for July 22 and July 23.
All commercial and multi-family customers are running on a normal schedule.
Republic customers will receive a credit toward their next bill.
The city is also offering free food and yard waste drop-off at Cedar Grove’s composting facility at 17825 Cedar Grove Road SE at no charge from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. July 21 to July 25 and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 26.
Food and yard waste drop-off requires proof of Renton residency, such as ID, Republic Services bill or city of Renton utility bill. No woody debris longer than four feet and wider than four inches and commercial loads allowed.
The work stoppage at Republic Services was due to a labor dispute. A couple of dozen cities in King and and Snohomish counties contract with Republic Services. According to a Teamsters Local 252 press release out of Lacey, that local went on strike July 9 at a transfer facility to protest unfair labor practices at Republic Services. More than 2,000 Teamsters at Republic Services went on strike or actively honored picket lines nationwide, according to a July 15 social media post by the Teamsters national office in Washington, D.C. Striking Teamsters extended picket lines to Los Angeles and a major landfill in Ohio.
