Christina H. Chung, a senior at Hazen High School, Aretha Luong, a senior at Liberty High School, and Uyen-Chi L. Ta, a senior at Lindbergh High School, are among the 90 recipients of the Comcast Foundation’s annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards in Washington State, the Foundation has announced.
Among Chung’s past and present achievements: participating in and serving as president of Key Club and participating in the World Association For Children and Parents (WACAP) and Washington Aerospace Scholars. She was also involved in student government, tennis and the Link Crew. At the time the school nominated her for the award, Chung was planning to study engineering at the University of Washington.
Among Luong’s past and present achievements: participating in and serving as present of the Future Educators Association, and participating in Young Executives of Color and the Distributive Educations Clubs of America (DECA) and as co-captain of the Martin Luther King Jr Assembly. At the time the school nominated her for the scholarship, Luong was planning to study business at the University of Washington.
Among Ta’s past and present achievements: serving as a teacher’s assistant at a Vietnamese school; participating in Youth Group Dance at Bellevue Youth Convention; and participating in Future Business Leaders of America, where she won several public speaking awards, and Key Club and as president of DECA where she earned top honors in a national marketing competition. She served in student government and was editor of the yearbook. At the time the school nominated Ta for the scholarship, Ta was planning to study business at Western Washington University.
Lindbergh teacher Gene Kolczynski, who is involved in the DECA club, wrote to the Comcast Foundation that Ta “is one of the most well-balanced, thoughtful, forward-thinking students I have encountered…She balances family, faith, school, DECA, ASB Leadership and friends with aplomb. She is an exceptional team leader when the situation warrants and an equally good teammate when working in a group. As an example, she led a group of three students to a first place finish at the International Career and Development Conference in Utah last spring. VERY large accomplishment!”
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
“Each year, we are excited to provide scholarships for these talented students,” said Charisse R. Lillie, president of the Comcast Foundation and vice president, Community Investment of Comcast Corp. “Comcast seeks students who demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities and who reflect a strong commitment to community service. These students are our future leaders, and we hope these scholarships will help to power their dreams for success.”
To date, Comcast has awarded nearly $19 million to nearly 19,000 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners.
