The following was compiled from Renton Police Department case reports.

The driver behind the wheel of a Jeep Grand Cherokee seemed intent to avoid police – probably because the Jeep was reported stolen earlier in the day on Jan. 28.

An officer became suspicious when the Jeep’s driver, apparently waiting to turn south on Sunset Boulevard, turned north several seconds after the officer passed him at about 9:50 p.m.

The officer turned around and pulled into a gas station behind the Jeep – which the officer now knew was stolen. The Jeep pulled out of the gas station, without buying gas, and the officer followed.

Other officers were in the area.

The officer continued to follow the Jeep, waiting behind it at the left-turn lane at Park Avenue to southbound I-405. The officer was concerned the Jeep would flee to the freeway, so he pulled about two feet in front of the Jeep and turned on his overhead lights.

As the officer got out of his vehicle, the Jeep driver backed up and pulled around the cruiser. He entered the southbound 405 off ramp traveling the wrong way.

Officers didn’t follow him up the off-ramp.

The Sheriff’s Office Guardian 1 helicopter and other officers searched for the Jeep, but it wasn’t located. The driver was a white male in his early 20s, wearing a backward baseball hat and a hooded jacket.

The Jeep was stolen from the 700 block of South Tobin Street, one of 106 vehicles stolen in Renton in January.

Injured woman treated at transit bay

A 30-year-old Seattle woman was found breathing but unconscious on the ground at a bus bay at the Renton Transit Center late Jan. 28.

She smelled of intoxicants and had a large knot and abrasion on her forehead.  Her eyes were swollen and bruised and she had numerous scratches.

She was unable to explain what had happened to her. She was transported to Valley Medical Center by medics, who couldn’t determine the extent of her head injuries.

He stole liquor so he could sell it

Store security at the Rite Aid on Grady Way on Jan. 29 stopped a 21-year-old man who told officers a man at the Renton Transit Center offered to pay him if he would buy him liquor.

The Renton man was carrying a knife and pair of pliers; he had removed the security device from two of the three bottles he concealed in his jacket.

Besides taking the liquor, the suspect also tried to walk out with several electronic devices concealed in his jacket.

He rammed into a loss-prevention officer at the front of the store in an attempt to knock him down. In the process one of the bottles fell and broke on the ground.

The merchandise recovered totaled $264. The suspect was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of third-degree theft.

Doesn’t understand, Don’t go inside

Told not to by the Renton officer standing next to him, a 29-year-old Renton man walked into the Walgreen’s on Rainier Avenue.

Earlier in the day, he had shoplifted at the drugstore. In June he was also trespassed from Walgreens.

He’s known to Renton Police officers.

The suspect was spotted Jan. 29 near South Third Street after just leaving Walgreens He used a racial epithet and told the officer, “I’ll go back there.” He headed back toward Walgreens.

The officer walked to entrance of Walgreens and told him not to go inside, but he walked right past the officer.

He was arrested inside and booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of second-degree criminal trespass.

Pizza delivered but cash is fake

The pizza-delivery man held up his end of the deal: he brought her $79 worth of pizza.

And she paid him the money, after getting a final $9 from her Mazda. She had handed him two $5 and three $20 bills.

He left, not checking the bills until he returned from the delivery on  Jan. 29. The bills were counterfeit: the $5 bills were white and printed crooked and the $20 bills were bleeding from rain drops.

The pizza driver told officers he missed the fake bills because it was dark outside. He wasn’t even sure the woman lived at the apartment where he delivered the pizzas.

The officer called the number on the pizza order, but the answerer hung up. No one answered the apartment door. The Mazda’s VIN was blocked and the plates were removed.

The restaurant put a red flag on the phone number.

Meth found in injured man’s sock

An intoxicated Auburn man brought more than his injuries from a car crash to the emergency room at Valley Medical Center Jan. 30.

A syringe with a clear liquid inside was found in his sock as ER personnel were attempting to remove his clothes. He was also uncooperative and was restrained on a back board.

The liquid tested positive for methamphetamine. There was hardly enough drugs to test, so the man didn’t face drug charges.

Just get him out of my taxi

The taxi driver who nearly lost control when the customer opened the rear door of the moving cab and witnessed him hit a man in the face late Feb. 1 just wanted him out of his taxi.

The taxi driver pulled into a parking lot on 108th Avenue Southeast and told the 32-year-old Kent man to get out. An officer arrived and customer, who smelled of liquor and used profanities, refused to cooperate.

A Renton man walked up to tell the officer that the customer had just assaulted him.

The Kent man had gotten out of the taxi, stumbling and mumbling, and punched the window of the Renton man’s minivan and kicked the headlight. The driver had locked the doors so he couldn’t get in.

He got back in the taxi.

The Renton man was there to pick up his wife from work and decided to escort her to the minivan, rather than wait for her. As he walked back to the driver’s side, he was slapped in the face by the Kent man, who got out of the taxi a second time. He then walked back to the taxi.

The Kent man was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of fourth-degree assault.

All that trouble for a bag of garbage

The car prowler didn’t get away with much, just a bag full of old lunch and garbage, when he broke into a a Jetta Jan. 28 parked at The Landing.

The prowler broke in while the owner’s relative was working out at the gym. Three windows were broken. The owner thinks the prowler was just trying to damage his car, not steal something.
