Contaminated soil and groundwater on Boeing Commercial Airplane property in Renton would undergo cleanup under plans and legal agreements with the Washington Department of Ecology.
The ecology department is seeking public comment on the proposals and related documents through March 9.
Boeing would clean up 12 locations, three of them on land leased at Renton Municipal Airport. Contaminants include residues of solvents and petroleum products from leaks and spills over many years, according to an ecology department press release.
Boeing began assembling planes at the Renton plant in 1941. The property – located on the south shore of Lake Washington and across the Cedar River from the Renton airport – has undergone cleanup studies and several interim cleanup projects over the past 15 years to prevent contaminants from reaching the lake and river.
The documents up for public comment include an Agreed Order, a Cleanup Action Plan, a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study, a State Environmental Policy Act environmental checklist and Declaration of Non-Significance, and a Public Involvement Plan.
The documents are also available for review at the King County Renton Library, 100 Mill Ave. S., and at the Department of Ecology Northwest Region office, 3190 160th Ave., S.E., Bellevue, by appointment, 425-649-7190
After approval by the ecology department of the order, plans and other documents, Boeing will submit detailed engineering plans and designs for ecology department review and public comment, with cleanup work expected to begin in late 2011, according to the ecology department.
The public can send comments to Byung Maeng, ecology site manager, at Byung.maeng@ecy.wa.gov or by mail, Byung Maeng, ecology site manager, Department of Ecology, 3190 160th Ave. S.E., Bellevue WA, 98008-5452
