Crews reopened State Route 520 and State Route 167 on time Monday morning after separate weekend-long closures. All lanes of SR 520 and SR 167 opened by 4:30 a.m., just in time for the morning commute.

Good weather and highly coordinated plans helped crews get the work done on time, accordig to the Washington state Department of transportation. During the weekend closures, crews installed culverts in Bellevue and Renton and knocked down a highway overpass in Bellevue. Add in work on State Route 9 in Clearview andLake Stevens and it was the largest construction weekend of the year for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“I want to thank drivers for their patience this weekend as we completed this essential work.” said Lorena Eng, WSDOT regional administrator. “Although we had some congestion on Saturday before the Seahawks game, most of the traffic backups were minimal thanks to people altering their travel plans and routes.”

SR 167 work

On SR 167, crews installed a 220-foot-long culvert just south of Interstate 405 in Renton. That work required crews to dig a 25-foot-deep trench across all lanes of the highway, then remove and replace about 100 feet of embankment and roadway surface.

SR 520 work

On SR 520, crews demolished the old Bellevue Way Northeast overpass to make room for a new, wider overpass, and installed a fish-friendly culvert just east of Bellevue Way Northeast. The overpass demolition resulted in 650 cubic yards of concrete rubble and more than 92,000 pounds of rebar that will be recycled.

To install the fish-friendly culvert, crews dug a 25-foot-deep trench across all lanes of the highway, inserted precast concrete culvert sections, then repaved the highway. When complete, the culvert will be more than 230 feet long.
