The 21-year-old Seattle man who ran over a state trooper’s foot during a traffic stop on Interstate 405 at about 8:45 a.m. Monday was apprehended after a chase by car and on foot.

The Renton Police Department is investigating the incident because a state trooper fired his handgun after the suspect ran over his foot.

“It’s unclear whether there was more than one round fired, if there was mutual fire, or if there were other weapons involved,” said Terri Vickers, a spokeswoman for the Renton Police Department.

The trooper, whose name wasn’t released, stopped the suspect for driving in the carpool lane on northbound I-405 near the State Route 900 overpass, according to Vickers.

The driver then fled, drove up the Northeast 30th exit, across Northeast 30th and up a steep embankment. The car, a 2012 Chrysler 300, was not visible from below because of heavy brush.

The car had been reported stolen to the Port of Seattle Police.

The nearby Kennydale Elementary School was not in session because the Renton School District is on spring break. However, it’s possible children could have been walking to school in the immediate area. Renton Police officers and state troopers searched the area around the Arco gas station on Northeast 30th and down the hillside into Mill Creek Park.

Witnesses pointed out the direction the man had taken from the scene.

At one point the suspect waded across May Creek. Officers from a number of agencies helped set up a perimeter to contain the suspect.

The suspect was arrested near Jones Road at 9:15 a.m. He was taken to  Harborvew Medical Center with minor injuries. The trooper, a six-year veteran with the patrol, was treated for the injury to his foot.

The investigation caused traffic backups during the morning on northbound 405 and on State Route 167, where it merges with 405.
