School canceled after car crashes into Hazen High School

Security footage has been handed over to Renton police after unidentified culprits made a getaway in second car.

School was canceled Oct. 13 at Hazen High School after a car crashed into the front of the school early Thursday morning.

The car had presumably been driven into the front of the main building at around 5 a.m Thursday morning, said Randy Matheson of the Renton School District. The front end of the car went through the glass wall, but was stopped by steel structures within the wall and a steel bench on the other side of the glass.

According to Matheson, the school handed over security footage to the Renton Police Department, which showed two unidentified people exiting the vehicle after the crash and then making a getaway in a second car.

“There are cameras right on that spot,” Matheson said in a phone call, referring to the site of the crash which should allow an easy identification of the driver and passenger.

Hazen High School staff, students and parents were notified of the school’s closure soon after the site of the crash was found by the school’s staff.

After an inspection of the site, officials determined there is no structural damage to the building and afternoon school activities, along with parent-teacher conferences, have not been canceled. Classes resume on Friday, Oct. 14.
