The Rotary Club of Renton has recognized three high school students March Youth of the Month.
- Laura Kooiman is a Hazen High School senior with a 3.9 grade point average.
She has been a member of drama club, Divina Voce, the National Honor Society, Link Crew, cross country and Raising Student Voices and Participation.
Kooiman received an Outstanding Junior Award, National Merit Commended Scholar, a “superior” rating at a WMEA solo contest, American Association of University Women certificate of excellence in technology, drama club award for best female Lead.
She has volunteered with St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.
She plans to attend a four-year university to study either music or science, then plans to pursue a career in either opera or nutrition.
- Ruth Gronenthal is a Lindbergh High School senior with a 3.9 GPA.
She has been a member of National Honor Society, orchestra, tennis and swim.
She has been awarded letters in swim and tennis and the title concert mistress in orchestra.
She volunteers with the Village Chapel clothing and food ministries, working with clothing donations and preparing meal bags.
She plans to attend a four year university to study math, science and music. Career possibilities include teaching, chemical engineering or statistician.
- Taylor Williams is a Renton High School senior with a 3.1 GPA.
She has participated in the Black Student Union, drama club, ASB vice president, varsity track and varsity basketball.
She has been awarded Student of the Month in various subjects, Second Honors, National Honor Society, varsity letters in track and basketball, most valuable player for track.
Williams also tutors students at Y2Kids.
She plans to attend a four year university to major in civil engineering or English education and to minor in philosophy.
She hopes to play college basketball or track.
After being selected by counselors, a selection committee of Rotary members reviews applications and interviews students to identify those who will be selected as Youth of the Month. The award is given to students who possess leadership abilities, maintain a good grade point average, participate in school activities and volunteer in their community.
