Renton to honor its veterans this Memorial Day holiday

To honor veterans who have served at home and aboard, there are several opportunities for reflection and celebration in Renton this weekend and Memorial Day.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, there will be free hot dogs and soda at Greenwood Memorial Park, 350 Monroe Ave. N.E. The Keith Highlander Pipe Band will play mid-day Saturday and Sunday and Liberty High School ROTC will distribute information bags.

There will be a formal program at 11 a.m., Monday on the grounds with music and featured speaker Lt. Col. Michael W. Dillard with the U.S. Air Force.  The public is encouraged to place wreaths. Also placing wreaths will be Pastor Fred DeBerry and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. There will be a military salute and the release of peace doves.

Also Monday, the City of Renton is hosting a special event to mark Memorial Day.

The program begins at 1 p.m. and includes an invocation by the local chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1263), presentation of the Colors and the National Anthem.  Wreaths will be presented at the memorial honoring the five branches of military service and a ceremonial honor guard, playing of Taps, and singing of a patriotic song will conclude the ceremony.

In attendance will be City Council member King Parker, Col. Gregory Allen, the Frank R. Vaise VFW Post 1263, Fred Hancock American Legion Post 19, Pat Darst, VFW chaplain, and buglers and vocalists.

The program takes place at the Veteran’s Memorial Park, 523 S. Third St.
