Renton signing up members for CERT academy to train for disasters

The City of Renton is signing up members for the city’s fall Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) Academy, put on the Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department.

CERT is a nationwide all-hazards, disaster-preparedness program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It is also part of the national Citizens Corps program to increase preparedness through volunteerism.

CERT volunteers work with the fire department to better prepare the community to respond to disasters.

The fall CERT academy will be held 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday evenings, Sept. 22-Nov. 3, with a disaster simulation 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 6.

Classes are taught by fire department personnel and local experts. The cost is $25 for Renton residents and $30 for non-residents. They are taught at Renton Fire Station 14, 1900 Lind Ave. S.W.

For more information about CERT or to register for classes, contact Mindi Mattson at 425-430-7041 or visit rentonwa.gov and click on the recreation division and then on cybersignup.org.
