Renton Little League collects 3,000 pounds of food for food bank

Their first time at bat, players, parents and supporters of Renton Little League collected about 3,000 pounds of food for the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank.

Players and parents filled the beds of three pickup trucks Tuesday with food and other essentials for delivery to the food bank.

The delivery included about 450 pounds of coffee, about 300 pounds of vegetables, potatoes, bread – and a cash donation of $450.

The food was collected in just a few short days in the Renton Little League 1st Annual Food Drive.

“I saw the food bank was low on food and they needed a helping hand,” said Wendy Hatch, one of the key organizers of the food drive.

She plans on getting even more organized next year, challenging other leagues to raise food donations as well.

The Renton Little League has 29 teams and 375 players, according to league President Chris Hanis, who was on hand to help unload the trucks.

Hanis said the community has supported Little League for a long time, so “there is no reason we can’t return the favor.”
