United Way offers free tax preparations

United Way of King County is ready to help individuals and families who earn less than $64,000 file their taxes. Twenty seven tax sites staffed by more than 900 United Way volunteers opened Jan. 9 and will remain open until April 20. Filing deadline this year is April 18.

There will be tax preparation sites at Salvation Army Renton Rotary, 206 S. Tobin St (5-9 p.m. on Monday and Wednesdays; 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays) and Fairwood Library, 17009 140th Ave SE (5-8 p.m. on Mondays; Noon-3p.m. on Thursdays; 10 a.m.-2p.m. on Saturdays).

For more information, visit https://www.uwkc.org/need-help/tax-help/.

United Way reminds filers who are claiming the earned income tax credit or the additional child tax credit that their refunds may be delayed this year. Effective in 2017, the PATH Act requires the IRS to hold the refunds claiming EITC and ACTC until Feb. 15. This change affects some returns submitted early in the tax filing season. United Way recommends people file their returns as they normally do, but to anticipate a delay if they are filing early and claiming these credits. The IRS expects that refunds impacted by this delay will be deposited into bank accounts no later than the week of Feb. 27.
