Renton High School’s ARROW newsmagazine took first place in the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association’s Best in Show journalism competition last weekend in Anaheim, Calif.

The convention hosted 3,900 high school journalists.

Renton High was awarded the first-place trophy for the special edition category for their work on the school’s centennial edition. Judges gave the students high marks for the quality of the design, content, photography and editorial leadership. Derek Smith is the adviser.

“I think people were interested in it because it felt different from a normal newspaper,” said Max Bureau, Renton High senior and managing editor of the publication. “But we still contributed to the legacy of Renton High School. We wanted to leave something behind.”

Students Katie Reynolds was awarded “Honorable Mention, Editorial Cartooning” and Mindy Saeteurn was awarded “Honorable Mention, Computer Design: Photoshop.”

Other student publications from Washington state won awards, including Hazen High School’s The Lonach, which took sixth place in Best in Show for yearbooks 224 or fewer pages. Kiera Brown is editor and Jane Sawyer is the adviser.
