Renton girl wins national piano competition

McKenzie Fysh of Renton was a winner in a recent national piano competition in Los Angeles.

Competing in the first annual Roland National Piano Festival, she won the Youth 2 division (ages 10 through 13) after winning one of six regional events held in October involving more than 300 contestants.

McKenzie — daughter of executive Gavin Fysh who owns Church Web Works, headquartered in downtown Renton — is a straight-A student at Renton Christian School. She is a student at the Prosser Music Academy in Tukwila, where Jee Wong, director, is her instructor.

The performers were judged not only on their playing prowess, but also on their ability to introduce digital effects into their playing in a creative way. Judges included national recording artists Yana Reznik and David Benoit, as well as world-renowned musical director Paul Mirkovich.

Three of the four winners were from Washington state. The others were Maddy Magana of Maple Valley, who won the Youth 1 division (ages 9 and younger), and Nicole Ventresca of Bellingham, winner of the adult division. Marissa Magana, Maddy’s sister, was named runner-up in the Youth 2 division — the only division in which the judges awarded a runner-up prize.
