The Renton City Council will hold a public meeting Monday to inform the public and take public comment about King County Proposition 1, the Veterans and Human Services Levy.

The council may decide whether to support or oppose the measure at the conclusion of the meeting, or take no action at all.

The council’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. in its chambers, seventh floor, Renton City Hall. The levy meeting is one of the first items on the agenda.

Proposition 1 is on the Aug. 16 primary election ballot. It is an extension of an existing levy that voters approved countywide in 2005. The levy supports veterans, military personnel and their families as well as other individuals and families in need throughout the county by generating property tax funding.

Half of the funding goes to veterans and their families and the other half goes to individuals and families in need.

The current levy expires this year. The new levy would cost homeowners about $20 for a home valued at about $400,000 in 2012 for the first year. The levy will generate about $16 million a year.
