The Renton City Council prepared for the new year by announcing committees at their final city council meeting of 2025.
At the Dec. 8 meeting, the council announced the cancellation of the remainder of the December meetings and 2026 council committee assignments from the Committee on Committees.
The community services committee will meet on the second and fourth Mondays at 3 p.m. Councilmember Ryan McIrvin will serve as chair, Councilmember Carmen Rivera as vice-chair and Councilmember Kim-Khánh Văn as a member. Example topics listed for this committee include parks, recreation, golf course, community centers, general services, facilities, library, senior services, human services and appointments to boards and commissions.
The finance committee will meet on the second and fourth Mondays at 4 p.m. Councilmember Valerie O’Halloran will serve as chair, McIrvin as vice-chair and Councilmember James Alberson as a member. Example topics for this committee include financial reports, computer/information systems, insurance issues, claims/vouchers review, organizational and personnel issues and reports.
The planning and development committee will meet on the second and fourth Mondays at 5 p.m. Councilmember Ed Prince will serve as chair, Văn as vice-chair and McIrvin as a member. Topics in this committee may include building regulations, zoning, planning, annexations and land use appeals, for example.
The utilities committee will meet the first and third Mondays at 3 p.m. Văn will serve as chair, Alberson as vice-chair and Rivera as a member. This committee discusses issues related to water utility, wastewater (sewer) utility, surface water (storm drainage) utility, garbage, recycling and flood control.
The public safety committee will meet on the first and third Monday at 4 p.m. Alberson will serve as chair, O’Halloran as vice-chair and Prince as a member. This committee discusses fire-related issues, police-related issues, emergency communications and public safety facilities.
The transportation committee will meet on the first and third Monday at 5 p.m. Rivera will serve as chair, Prince as vice-chair and O’Halloran as a member. Topics that may be discussed here include streets, airport, HOV/mass transit and signals and lighting.
These meetings will typically be held in the seventh floor council conference room at Renton City Hall and on video conference. Confirmed time and the weekly agenda are usually available the Friday before on the City of Renton meeting portal.
