Record high temperatures expected today as heat wave reaches peak; where to beat heat

After temperatures promise to soar into the 90s this week, the National Weather Service posted a heat advisory for the Puget Sound Region.

The forecast for Thursday is the hottest with a high of 93 and a low of 63, according to NWS.

The heat advisory ends Friday night, with a forecast of 89 degrees.

After a chilly July 4, temperatures reached 86 degrees at the Renton Municipal Airport Wednesday.

Because of the long days, residents can’t expect much relief until after the sun sets at about 9 p.m. tonight.

Significant cooling won’t begin until about midnight, according to NWS.

The advisory impacts the elderly, small children and people who work in the sun. They’re encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and to stay out of the sun.

Some locations throughout the city where people can escape the heat include:

— Renton Community Center at 1715 Maple Valley Highway

Open to the public Monday – Thursday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Renton Senior Activity Center at 211 Burnett Avenue N.

Welcomes seniors during its normal operating hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Public libraries

— Movie theaters

— Local stores and malls

Record breaking temperatures

Renton airport readings are relatively new, but Sea-Tac’s July 8 record high of 87 degrees, 1985 and 1952, is expected to be broken.

Friday’s record high is 91, set in 1985.
