Two Renton Police officers and a Renton fire captain were honored March 23 by the Fred Hancock American Legion Post 19 and Auxiliary Unit 19 at its annual Law and Order Night.
Officers Edward Sagiao was selected to receive the American Legion Department of Washington’s Humanitarian and Lifesaving Award. In March 2009, Sagiao entered a burning vehicle involved in an accident to save a woman inside.
Officer Thaddeus Kerkhoff was the post nominee for the Department Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Officer but was not selected. Kerkhoff is credited with saving the life of a man shot outside a tavern on Main Avenue in September.
Fire Captain Erik Wallgren is the post’s and department’s Firefighter of the Year. Last September Wallgren risked his life to rescue a person from a burning building. Wallgren also was honored as its 2009 Fire Officer of the Year.
The post also recognized Officer Shelly Hamel, who assisted Officer Sagiao in his lifesaving efforts, and Officers Edward Chang, Kelly Matsukawa and Jason Trader, who assisted Kerkhoff.
The Department of Washington will present its awards to Sagiao and Wallgren at the Department Convention on July 10.
The post also made a special memorial tribute to the six law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty in Washington this past year.
