POLICE BLOTTER: Woman faces extortion attempt over nude photos

The following information was compiled from City of Renton police reports.

A Bremerton woman was extorted for $150 over nude photos taken of her.

While staying with a friend in the 3700 block of Northeast Fourth Street, on Nov. 13, the woman was threatened via text message.

An unknown source said that they needed $150 sent to a Paypal account or they would post two nude photographs of the woman to the Internet. The 24-year-old woman told police she had taken four nude photographs, two of which she saved to her mobile phone and sent to her boyfriend several weeks ago. The woman thought somehow her ex-husband was involved, but his computer had been broken for the past six days.

The threats were not for physical harm and the text did not contain instructions on how to make the payment and to whom.

Possible scam

A Renton man narrowly escaped being the victim of a scam naming the Renton Police Department.

The 45-year-old man called the Police Department on Nov. 9 to report he had been contacted by someone impersonating a Renton Police officer. The impersonator wanted the man to accept a cash-on-delivery package for the price of $100. Saying it was for advertising in the “Renton Police Department Newspaper,” the impersonator alternated between fluent English and Vietnamese. A UPS worker tried to deliver the package once to his business, but he refused it, noting the out-of-state address.

The impersonator called again, convinced the man his purpose was legitimate and the package was delivered again. This time the UPS person left before police arrived. Police have not been able to locate the owner of the cell phone number the victim supplied.

Stand burglarized

A burglary occurred at Records Espresso at 600 Park Avenue North in Renton at around 11:25 p.m. Nov. 8.

Four money bags were stolen, two of which had money in them. One had $100 worth of change, the other had an unknown amount from afternoon sales. An officer with a K-9 unit tracked a suspect to the 300 block of Garden Avenue North. Police lifted a print from inside the stand. A hammer and pliers found near the broken window were taken into evidence.

Girl bitten by squirrel

A 14-year-old Renton girl was bitten by a flying squirrel on Nov. 11.

The girl’s cat had the squirrel trapped on her back deck. Around 7 a.m. the girl rescued the squirrel from the cat and was bitten on her right little finger. Her family gave the squirrel to the Fish Gallery on 601 S. Grady Way.

Police were dispatched to collect the squirrel and transport it to the Renton Veterinary Hospital. The squirrel then went to Sawyer Lake Veterinary Hospital for medical evaluation and containment. There was no need to test the squirrel for rabies or place it in quarantine, according to a King County Public Health nurse.

Rape investigation

Renton Police investigated a suspected rape of a child while contacting her and her parents at their residence in Renton on Nov. 10.

The father of the 14-year-old girl told officers he believed she was raped after she ran away from home.

The 14-year-old daughter ran away from home with her 17-year-old sister on Nov. 8. They met up with some friends and the 18-year-old male suspect at the Fred Meyer and Shari’s restaurant off of Benson Road. After some time had passed, the 14-year-old went to the suspect’s house, watched a movie and fell asleep. The suspect slept in their room and woke the 14-year-old up to tell her the police were coming because she had been listed as a runaway. The girl insisted to police that no sexual contact had occurred. She gave all of her clothing to officers during the investigation.

Because of the lack of evidence, no witnesses and the girl’s sworn statement, police did not arrest the 18-year-old.

Woman assaulted

A recently homeless Kent woman was assaulted on Nov. 17.

The 54-year-old Kent woman got into an argument with a 50-year-old transient man in the 200 block of Mill Avenue South around 8 p.m. An officer observed the man pull the woman down the street against her will and then grab her by the hair as she tried to walk away. She hit the ground. Once police intervened, the woman said she had been homeless for two and a half months and in a relationship with the man for about one month.

The woman said she felt pain in her left elbow from being pulled to the ground, but she declined medical attention. The man was arrested for investigation of fourth-degree assault.
