New sinkhole opens over sewerline on Royal Hills Drive in Renton

A new sinkhole opened up along Royal Hills Drive on Wednesday, not far from 16-foot one that revealed a corroded sewerline last week.

That corroded 20-inch sewer line was the entry spot for debris that clogged the sewerline near where it narrows to 14 inches, forcing sewage to gush out of a manhole. Some of that sewage made it to the Cedar River down an access road.

Public works director Gregg Zimmerman and maintenance services director Mike Stenhouse inspected the new sinkhole in the early evening. The new sinkhole is similar to the one the city filledjust after midnight last Thursday after repairing the concrete sewerline.

The new sinkhole is also near the Royal Hills Apartments.

The City of Renton is closing and barricading the north side of Royal Hills Drive tonight at the sinkhole, limiting traffic to just one lane. Shoreline Construction, which assisted in the repairs to the first sinkhole, is bringing in 20-foot-wide steel plates tonight that will be placed along the entire width of the street.

Further inspection will be done Thursday, with repairs likely to occur on Friday morning.
