A 50-year-old Renton man, who was expected home on Oct. 28 from a camping trip, was found dead in a lake Wednesday in the Conconully area of Okanogan County in Eastern Washington.

Christopher D. Campbell was last seen at about 12:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Sit’n Bull cafe in Conconully. He had been on a camping trip near Fish Lake, where his camping gear was found, according to the Okanogan Sheriff’s Office.

Family members had been in the area trying to locate his 1987 Toyota pickup.

On Wednesday, several volunteers continued to search for Campbell in the Conconully area. The Okanogan County Search and Rescue and sheriff’s deputies used a boat to search waterways in the area.

At about 1:30 p.m. a searcher found a broken tree limb and glass at the far north end of the upper reservoir of Conconully Lake. The boat patrol could see what appeared to be tire tracks at the bottom of a 40-foot embankment, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Search and rescue divers found Campbell’s truck in approximately 12 feet of water about 300 feet from end of the lake, with his body inside.

It appeared Campbell was returning to his camp at Fish Lake when something happened and he drove off the edge of road and went down the embankment, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

His family was there when his body was recovered. An autopsy was scheduled for Campbell in Wenatchee.
