Marcie Maxwell of Renton has resigned her seat in the state House of Representatives to accept a post as a senior education policy adviser to Gov. Jay Inslee.

Maxwell, who made the announcement Tuesday, will join Inslee’s Legislative Affairs and Policy Office.

Maxwell, elected to three terms in the House, has been a leader in education issues in the state and in the Legislature. In the just-concluded legislative session, she was the deputy majority leader for education and opportunity.

“I’ve been honored to serve the people of the 41st District in South and East King County and believe that my new position in the Governor’s Office will continue my work on their priorities for our state,” Maxwell said in a press release.

The Washington State Democratic Party will submit the names of three candidates to replace Maxwell to the King County Council, which will select a replacement to complete her third, two-year term which began this year. Maxwell’s House seat will be up for election in the 2014 general election.

In her new job Maxwell will focus on K-12, early learning and higher education policy in the state.

Maxwell, who was named Renton’s Citizen of the Year in 2004, served eight years on the Renton School Board. She has held a number of leadership positions in the Renton community.

She served all of the King County School Boards as their Legislative Representative to the Washington State School Directors Association.  In the legislature, Maxwell was on the House Education Committee, Appropriations Committee, Education Appropriations Subcommittee, Rules Committee, and the Technology and Economic Development Committee.

Maxwell is a Realtor and the owner of a small business.
