Man wanted by Kirkland Police shot by Renton officer in Kennydale

A 24-year-old man wanted by Kirkland police was shot in the back in a confrontation with Renton Police officers in the backyard of his parents’ Kennydale home Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting is being investigated by the Kent Police Department because it involved a Renton Police officer, who is 41 and a seven-year veteran of the department.

About two weeks ago, the man pointed a gun at a Kirkland Police officer when officers tried to arrest him, said Kent Police Sgt. Pat Lowery.

Kirkland Police learned he may have gone to his parents’ home in the 2100 block of Northeast 23rd Street. Renton Police dispatched its Special Enforcement Unit to the scene.

Renton officers walked into the backyard and identified themselves. The man pointed a hose at them and tried to spray them with water, said Lowery. The man then turned and began running away.

A Renton officer fired three rounds at the man, but it wasn’t immediately known how many hit him, Lowery said. The injuries were not life-threatening. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center after he was stabilized at the scene.

The man had a knife and a handgun in his possession when he was shot, Lowery said. He has a criminal past.

“There is a wide array of felonies and misdemeanors,” Lowery said.
