A 19-year-old Tacoma man was arrested after he called 911 to report the vehicle he stole ran out of gas and was disabled on the shoulder of State Route 167 in Renton.
Monday at about 5:30 a.m., a City Transfer employee witnessed a man steal a silver 1985 Chevy truck from the company yard, according to a Washington State Patrol press release.
At about 12:30 p.m., another employee of the same Sumner company was traveling southbound on SR 167 when he spotted the silver truck that was stolen.
The truck was occupied and disabled on the left shoulder just north of South 180th Street.
Just minutes after the employee called police, the driver of the truck called 911 to report the vehicle had run out of gas.
Troopers contacted the suspect who attempted to disguise himself as a City Transfer employee by wearing a fluorescent green vest he found in the truck.
Troopers asked for further proof of his employment, which he failed to provide.
The employee who witnessed the theft identified the man at the scene, according to the release.
Further investigation revealed that the truck did not run out of gas. The diesel-fuel truck was disabled when the suspect filled the tank with unleaded gas.
The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for auto theft, according to the release.
