Letter carriers collecting food

The National Association of Letter Carriers’ Annual Food Drive is this Saturday. Letter carriers throughout the country will collect non-perishable food donations from homes Saturday as they deliver mail along their postal routes. Bags for the food were to be delivered earlier this week.

The food collected in Renton will go to the Renton Rotary Salvation Army Food Bank.

Renton Salvation Army Captain Terry Masango said he hopes to get 70,000 pounds of food from the food drive. He said the number of families served by the food bank has almost doubled since last spring. Last March the food bank served about 7,000 families, and this March the food bank served about 13,000.

“We’re having to cut in half the food we’re giving people,” Masango said. “We’d like to give more food to many more families.”
