Puget Sound Energy Foundation awarded $202,500 to 84 charitable organizations in December, 27 of which are in King County.
The awards were the second round of grants given from a total distribution of more than $640,000 to 161 organizations in 2010.
The funds ranged from $1,000 to $25,000 grants and supported community programs in environmental stewardship, education, the arts and culture, with a particular emphasis on human services.
Renton-based King County Sexual Assault Resource Center was one of the recipients with a $5,000 grant.
“We are thrilled with that,” said Executive Director Mary Ellen Stone.
The money will go toward funding the center’s Dando Vos Program, or “giving voice” program when translated from Spanish. The program offers services for victims and families in Spanish.
The funds are much needed as one-third of KCSARC’s budget is state funded and Stone said they’re “very concerned about the state’s shortfall.”
They will continue to apply for grants such as the Puget Sound Energy Foundation grant and rely on the generosity of individual donors, foundations and corporations to add to their funding.
“What we’ll be doing is keeping the needs of victims of sexual assault in the forefront,” Stone said of her plans to keep a dialogue going with legislators.
