KCSARC director Mary Ellen Stone receives national award

Mary Ellen Stone, executive director of the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, has been awarded the 2012 Visionary Voice Award from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC).

A local champion of sexual assault victims has won a national award for her work.

Mary Ellen Stone, executive director of the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, has been awarded the 2012 Visionary Voice Award from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC).

According to the organizations, these awards “recognize the creativity and hard work of individuals around the country who have demonstrated outstanding advocacy and community work to end or prevent sexual violence.”

NSVRC credits Stone with being an important voice and active contributor to shaping sexual assault prevention, education and victim response in the community and statewide.

“Ms. Stone is a dedicated advocate who has worked diligently to ensure that sexual assault survivors receive quality comprehensive services. Her community leadership and commitment to survivors, community safety,

and quality prevention efforts are exemplary,” said Andrea Piper-Wentland, executive director of Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs.

Stone has been the executive director of Renton-based KCSARC since 1979.

She has grown KCSARC “into a well-known resource in her community with innovative programming, ongoing community events and awareness activities,” a release stated.

Stone is one of 20 recipients nationwide to receive the award.
