There’s a twist on this year’s IKEA Renton River Days Duck Hunt and it has to do with a goose.
This is the second year for the Duck Hunt leading up to the Renton River Days July 22-24 and the popular Rubber Ducky race on the festival’s Sunday.
It’s also the second year that the Renton Reporter has serialized the clues. Each day, the Renton Reporter will post on rentonreporter.com a new clue about where to find a duck.
The clue for duckling Jett kicks off the clues: This duckling has motored over to get car insurance at a place whose name scrambles to RAFTMATES. Which one? Find Megan!
Last year, organizers, including Mike Selinker of Renton and Lone Shark Games, were scurrying to find hosts for the ducks. Now it’s, “Can I have a duck, please,” Selinker said.
The hunt officially kicked off Wednesday and runs to July 20, but there was some early hunting going on, including at McLendon Hardware.
Last year’s Duck Hunt centered around Diana, a momma duck, who was looking for her lost ducklings.
This year, the hunt centers around the children’s game, Duck-Duck-Goose. A “picker” taps a “goose” and the chase is on to get back to the goose’s spot.
In the River Days’ version of the game, there’s a goose masquerading as a duck among the 30 ducks hosted by local businesses and organizations. Of course, since this is a hunt, players must find the ducks with the help of clues. There is a “secret message” to help find the goose. (Take a good look at the game card.)
“Even the hosts don’t know if they have the goose,” Selinker said.
Clues also are available on the Renton River Days Facebook page.
Players need to get a game card, available at the Facebook page or at participating hosts, or here. Once you find a duck, have a host stamp the duck on the card.
The more ducks that a player finds the greater the chance of winning in a drawing for prizes at Renton River Days. Finding the goose also nets another chance in the drawing.
This year there’s also a special ducklings and dragons scavenger hunt, hosted by the Renton-based Wizards of the Coast, at River Days.
The Duck Hunt is sponsored by First Savings Bank Northwest and the clues by HealthPoint.
Volunteers needed for IKEA Renton River days
The IKEA Renton River Days July 22-24 is looking for volunteers during the festival weekend.
Volunteers are needed to help in the information booth, to help with various children’s activities and art-related events, to help keep the park clean and litter-free, and to help with the Renton River Days parade.
To volunteer, e-mail Sharon Murphy, assistant volunteer coordinator at rrdvolunteer@comcast.net or call 425-235-4614. Most tasks are outdoors and require physical ability.
Potential volunteers also can visit www.RentonRiverDays.org for festival volunteer information and to download a festival volunteer application.
While most of the opportunities are intended for those 16 years and older, there may be positions available for those under 16.
