Jarod Thomas Lane pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder and first-degree arson in the slaying of his former girlfriend, Jessica Scholl, at her Renton home in May 2012.

The 21-year-old Lane, who like Scholl attended nearby Lindbergh High School, faces 25 to 33 years in prison when he’s sentenced on Oct. 18.

Prosecutors are recommending the maximum sentence of 33 years.

The murder charge includes two deadly weapon enhancements. Lane also was charged with arson because he set fire to the Scholl house after the assault on Scholl.

Sentencing is set for 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle before Superior Court Judge Mary Yu.

Lane was charged on May 29, 2012. Bail was set at $2 million because prosecutors described him as an “extreme danger to the community.” In June 2012 he had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

On the morning of May 25, 2012, prosecutor’s allege Lane, 19 at the time, murdered Scholl in her family home in Renton, stabbing her multiple times. He then set fire to a couch in the house.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at the home and discovered Scholl’s body.

Lane fled by car and was arrested 2,000 miles away in Oklahoma City on May 28. He is being held at the King County Jail in Seattle.

Hundreds mourned Jessica at a community vigil at Lindbergh High School in early June 2012. Case settings were continued several times.
