Indecent liberties charge filed in 2007 Renton cold case

DNA collected as part of a sexual-assault investigation in April on West Hill has led to charges of indecent liberties against a 27-year-old Renton man for an alleged sexual assault in 2007.

DNA collected as part of a sexual-assault investigation in April on West Hill has led to charges of indecent liberties against a 27-year-old Renton man for an alleged sexual assault in 2007.

Levi Querilla Staples Jr. is being held on $500,000 bail at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, where his arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 30.

Staples is also charged with indecent liberties for allegedly having sexual contact with a woman who was sleeping on a large couch at an apartment April 29 on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

It’s the DNA from semen collected at the apartment that matched DNA from blood collected from the scene of an assault on Nov. 25, 2007, at an apartment on Eagle Ridge Drive.

The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab notified Renton detectives in August of the match and the 2007 case was reopened. Staples was arrested on Nov. 12 at his workplace in Kent.

“This is great example of the value of DNA evidence,” said Michael Luther, commander of the Renton Police Department Investigations Division. “Without it, we would likely have never been able to solve this case.

“Hopefully this will bring some closure to the victim after all these years,” he said.

The victim in the 2007 assault told investigating officers she heard a knock on her door when she was getting ready for work. The man outside needed to borrow her phone, so she cracked open her door and handed it to him, according to charging documents.

After dialing numbers, he handed back the phone and pushed open the door. He covered her mouth with his hand and pushed her into a corner. She screamed. He was holding a knife.

He closed and locked the door and pushed her toward the bedroom. She fought back as he assaulted her. She was able to break free, run to the kitchen, with the man following her. She hit him with a pot and fled, seeking help at a nearby apartment.

According to charging documents, it’s likely the victim would have been raped had she not fought back. She was interviewed again in September.

Investigators sent blood samples found at the Renton apartment to the Washington State Crime Lab on Nov. 28, 2007. There were no DNA matches in any database. On Aug. 3, 2015, the lab notified a detective that a match had been found in a similar case the King County Sheriff’s Office was investigating on West Hill.

Staples had denied any sexual contact with the victim, according to charging documents. However, in June detectives received a warrant to collect his DNA, which matched fluid found on the victim’s clothing, according to charging documents.

His arraignment on Nov. 30 will include charges of indecent liberties in that case.
