Heat, hemp cut crowds at expanded Art, Antique Walk in downtown Renton

Shop keepers, artists and a nice-sized group of attendees enjoyed the sixth annual Art and Antique Walk in Renton over the weekend, despite competition from Seattle’s Hemp Fest and record temperatures.

“We thought it was very good,” said Bob McCorkle, one of the event organizers.

Downtown store owners and artists who lined street blocks told McCorkle it was the best setting for the event, even though the high temperatures pulled many would-be attendees away to the beach and the Seattle festival.

It felt like sales were down from last year, he said, although he didn’t get a full report from all of the vendors at the event Aug. 20.

“I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more children there,” McCorkle said, as the event tried to cater to kids with games, prizes and a chalk art contest.

McCorkle thinks that the three sponsors, the Piazza Group, Arts Unlimited and Allied Arts of Renton, all worked together to expand the art walk this year in the number of booths, layout of artists and by effectively using the piazza in the heart of downtown for the first time.

“It’s going to be bigger and better next year,” said McCorkle.
