Free screenings offered during Renton Heart Month

The City of Renton is planning activities for Renton Heart Month in February to help residents improve their heart health.

The Renton Fire & Emergency Services Department will lead this year’s efforts by providing free screenings to citizens this month.

“We know that the chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at the greatest risk,” said Mark Peterson, Fire Chief/Emergency Services Administrator. “Providing free screenings is the first step to helping people improve their cardiovascular health and live a longer healthier life.”

Residents can visit their local fire stations during regular business hours to receive a free screening. To find a station, go to rentonwa.gov. Firefighters also will offer screening stations at local businesses.

The Renton Senior Activity Center, 211 Burnett Ave. N., will host free workshops for citizens 50 years of age or older. Topics include recognizing the early signs of a heart attack or stroke, the role CPR and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) play in the chances of survival, the benefits of a healthy diet and the positive impact exercise has on a person’s cardiovascular system. Stop by or call 425-430-6633 to reserve a seat.

Cardiovascular disease is the nation’s No. 1 killer, affecting both men and women of every age and race. However, women do have an increased risk. Because of this, Valley Medical Center has teamed up with Renton Heart Month to host GLOW’s Red Dress Tea and Activewear Fashion Show.

The event is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Tea Palace, 2828 Sunset Lane. Reservations are required because seating is limited.

For more information about this event, go to valleymed.org/glow or call 425-656-4636. Firefighters will provide blood pressure and blood sugar screenings at the event.
