First trustees appointed to new board overseeing Valley Medical Center

The first three trustees have been appointed to a new board that will oversee operations of Valley Medical Center and its clinics, under a strategic alliance between UW Medicine and Public Hospital District No. 1.

The first three trustees have been appointed to a new board that will oversee operations of Valley Medical Center and its clinics, under a strategic alliance between UW Medicine and Public Hospital District No. 1.

The agreement forming the strategic alliance was signed Thursday by Paul Ramsey, CEO of UW Medicine, and Rich Roodman, the new CEO of the strategic alliance. Roodman remains as superintendent of Public Hospital District No. 1.

The strategic alliance became effective Friday (July 1).

The three new trustees will join the current five hospital district commissioners on the new 13-member Board of Trustees. The remaining five appointed trustees will come from the medical center’s service area, a broad area in southeast King County.

The appointments are made by Ramsey, who is also dean of the University of Washington School of Medicine.

The five public hospital district commissioners will met at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the hospital to consider a district operating budget for 2012 and 2013 and to set up a regular meeting schedule.

It’s likely the hospital district board will only have to meet four times between now and mid-January, mainly to develop a new budget.

The hospital district board will oversee the district’s assets and how to spend its tax dollars.

“I believe this strategic alliance provides exciting opportunities to combine efforts on important initiatives that will benefit patients and the community,” Ramsey wrote in a letter welcoming the hospital district commissioners to the new board.

Two of the new appointees will serve as chair and vice chair of the new Valley board.

• Lisa Jensen of Newcastle has served as a trustee on the Harborview Medical Center board since 2009. Harborview, like Valley Medical, is part of UW Medicine. She was elected to the Newcastle City Council in 2007. She is the principal of Jensen Companies, Inc., a South King County company that provides technical training and web site and Internet marketing support for businesses. She will serve as chairwoman for the first year.

• Peter Evans has served as a trustee on the Northwest Hospital and Medical Center and the Health Resources Northwest boards since 1991. Northwest is also part of UW Medicine. His specialized experience, according to Ramsey, is in community hospitals. He retired as vice president and partner at Seattle-Northwest Securities Corp. He also worked for Boeing Aerospace. He will serve as vice chairman for the first year.

• Johnese Spisso, chief health system officer for UW Medicine and vice president for medical affairs for the UW, is Ramsey’s designee on the Valley board.

Ramsey also is seeking nominations for the five trustees he will appoint from the medical center’s service area, which is larger than the actual hospital district. However, at least three of those individuals must live within the hospital district. He will seek advice from the UW Medicine Board in making those decisions.

Nominations are due by July 31.

Here are the requirements:

1. A letter of interest from the nominee of 250 words or less.

2. A resume or overview of the nominee’s life and qualifications

3. Three references who can address the nominee’s qualifications to serve on the hospital’s governing board.
