A phishing scam may have compromised the private information of 786 employees at Renton Technical College (RTC).

The scam took place on Friday, April 29, when an employee responded to an email spoofing the address of RTC’s President, Dr. Kevin McCarthy. The email requested 2015 W-2 information of all RTC employees, which included faculty, staff and student workers.

The email originated from a commercial mail server not owned or affiliated with the college.

College officials notified employees on the afternoon of April 29 and reported the scam to the Renton Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The college will pay for credit monitoring services for those affected to help prevent misuse of personal information.

“Renton Technical College values the privacy of our employees and students,” said McCarthy in a press release. “We will take all the necessary steps to defend that privacy, including educating employees to better spot scams and improving our procedures for protecting personal information.”
