Ed Prince widens small lead over Robin Jones for council seat | 2011 election results

After Tuesday night, Robin Jones and Ed Prince could only wait and watch as each day new results were posted in their ultra-close race for the Renton City Council.

After the initial results from Tuesday’s general election were released that night, Prince led by just 128 votes. That lead grew to 203 votes after new results were posted Wednesday afternoon.

“We really felt good,” Prince said Wednesday morning. “We really felt positive.”

After his primary victory, Prince could have been considered the front-runner. But he said he didn’t take that status for granted, calling it a trap. “We kept running hard,” he said.

He “just doesn’t know” what effect the controversy over personal or financial issues had on his campaign, including the loss of the endorsement  by the Renton Police Officers Guild.

Wednesday morning, he was upbeat.

“I am confident it’s going to trend in our favor,” he said.

Jones said he was expecting a close race. He also was outspent by Prince, which, he said, “makes a difference.”

He estimated Wednesday morning that about 5,000 votes remain to be counted.

The Tuesday results represented about 25 percent of Renton’s 42,539 registered voters.

A key issue, Jones heard during the campaign, is that voters want change on the City Council.

Where the supporters of Mark Martinez, who came in third in the primary, would go also was a factor. Although the position is nonpartisan, Jones said some of his political characteristics might appeal to Martinez supporters.

The two are running for the council seat held for 12 years by King Parker, who is retiring from the council.

Mayor Denis Law was running unopposed for his second term. City Council member Marcie Palmer also was running unopposed.

Here are the City Council results posted Wednesday afternoon:

Position 3: Incumbent Marcie Palmer, 8,307 or 98.51 percent, unopposed

Position 4: Sarah Sanoy-Wright, 2,889 or 29.58 percent, incumbent Greg Taylor, 6,843 or 70.06 percent

Position 5: Ed Prince, 5,098 or 50.81 percent, Robin Jones, 4,895 or 48.79 percent.

Position 7: Phyllis Forister, 3,597 or 36.09 percent, incumbent Don Persson, 6,345 or 63.65 percent.

Three members of the Renton School Board, Todd Franceschina, Lynn Desmarais and Denise Elder were running unopposed.

Results on the statewide initiatives are available on the Secretary of State’s website.
